2025 South Dakota Poison Exposure Summary

In 2025, South Dakota residents made 7,150 calls for assistance, involving 7,427 poison exposures. By comparison, in 2024 there were 6,670 calls involving 6,963 product exposures.

Why Are Children More at Risk for Poison Exposures?

Children are at higher risk for poison exposures because substances are often left within reach, children may imitate adults taking medicine, they cannot read or recognize dangers, and they are naturally curious and often put things in their mouths.

Routes of Exposure and Medical Outcomes

The most common route of exposure was ingestion. Other routes included inhalation, dermal, ocular, parenteral, bite or sting, otic, aspiration, vaginal, other, and unknown exposures.

Most exposures resulted in no effect, minor effect, or were classified as non-toxic. Moderate effects occurred less frequently, while major effects and deaths were rare.

Top Substance Categories

Of the 9,666 substances involved in South Dakota poison exposures, the top substance categories included:

  • Analgesics
  • Antidepressants
  • Household products
  • Alcohols
  • Antihistamines
  • Sedatives
  • Cardiovascular drugs
  • Personal care products
  • Stimulants
  • Hormones
